A motion has been backed to take Ottery one step closer to becoming an accredited plastic-free town.

Plastic Free Ottery secured the backing on Monday night from councillors to achieve the final element required by Surfers Against Sewage for the status.

Councillor Roger Giles said the town had been at the forefront of environmental initiatives and asked members to support a motion supporting the aims of the group and reduce the council’s own single-use plastic.

He said: “The greatest pollution problem to resolve at the moment, is that of single use plastics. So I am delighted that Ottery has an active group of community volunteers who are determined to play their part in tackling this great environmental threat.

“Please help the group to take the next step, and achieve the vitally important Surfers Against Sewage accreditation.

“This will bring credit on the group, on the town council, and will benefit our town.”

The motion was supported unanimously.
