A SUCCESFUL return for Sidmouth’s Caribbean Night next weekend could see the revival of another lost tradition- the town’s Christmas Carnival.

As townsfolk count down to the colourful summer reggae spectacular on August 14, organiser Ben Waring told the Herald he doesn’t want to stop at resurrecting one major event.

Ben also revealed he has struck a deal with FolkWeek chiefs that will see the Bulverton campsite used as a Caribbean Night car park- with a free bus service transporting event-goers to Knowle and back.

“Our objective to keep as much traffic out of the heart of Sidmouth as possible. We don’t want the Caribbean Night Revival having anything other than a positive affect,” said Ben, “If the event is a full house then we will be bringing back the Christmas Carnival.”

The festive tradition last took place in the town in 2006.

More than 2,000 Caribbean Night tickets have been sold since the event bagged a license and got the approval of insurers.

Ben said he expects a late rush next week, and tickets won’t be more expensive on the night.

“We will be crowning the Carnival Queen as per Caribbean Night tradition,” he said, “The young lady in question has raised a great deal of money and is instrumental in the carnival taking place.

“We want to see plenty of fancy dress, the forecast for the night is dry and warm.”

Anybody under the age of 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult to the event. Organisers have paid for an extra police presence to aid its smooth running.

Gates open at 5 pm with advanced ticket holders admitted first.

“Tickets will be available on the night,” said Ben, “but it will be first come first serve. “It is going to be a true revival of Sidmouth’s renowned outdoor live music event.”

Hurricane Force, Too Hot and The Real Thing are set to perform and Heart DJ’s Kevin Kane and Chris Dinnis will front the fun.
