BEER cubs were out in force last Tuesday night in the village to help Beer Horticultural Society seek out unwanted weeds. The society asked 1st Beer Cubs to help tackle weeds growing around Mariners Hall and Piggies Pass and the footpath from New Cut to Barline, before judging got underway for South West in Bloom on Wednesday. Some 23 cubs, assisted by the leaders, members of Beer Horticultural Society and even some ex-cubs who happened to be passing by, made light work of the weeds, moss and rubbish around the hall. Along Piggies Pass the task was to clear the creepers from the chain link fencing. Nigel Groves, cub leader, said: "Even the light rain that occasionally fell did not dampen the spirits of the cubs whose efforts were greatly appreciated by Ursula Makepeace, Chairman of Beer and District Horticultural Societ,y and the other members who were there to help supervise the cubs." The South West in Bloom judge, John Goulden, met with Mrs Makepeace during his two hour tour of the village in the rain and she presented him with a report of work carried out at Puffins Playgroup under the Neighbourhood Awards Scheme, approved in January by Beer Parish Council. Society secretary Kathy Boorman drove them around the village in the pouring rain and they visited the playgroup, Pecorama and the primary school. Mrs Makepeace said: "We went all over Beer. Puffins' children had planted lots of seeds and flowers and it looked very impressive. "At the school we saw their vegetable beds where they grow everything from seed, nurture it, weed it and eat the vegetables. "Mr Goulden said he was always looking for the wow factor and said the gardens at Pecorama constituted the wow factor." The results come in August.
