In 2019 I was delighted to be asked to join the board of Love Devon, the fundraising and trading arm of independent charity Devon Communities Together.

The charity is involved in varied and important work. As a local Solicitor and being passionate about our fabulous county and community, I jumped at the opportunity to help support it. Every fortnight I shall share news about current projects in these pages.

This year DCT is celebrating its diamond anniversary, 60 years of supporting communities in Devon. To mark this occasion the charity has launched its ‘Devon Diamonds’ campaign, designed to reflect on the past six decades and the people that have worked with the charity to benefit our county’s communities.

There are a number of plans in the pipeline, including an anniversary film; a ‘Community Chronicles’ timeline; a children’s artwork competition; and perhaps even a celebration event when current restrictions are lifted. In the meantime, however, the charity is seeking nominations.

Chief executive Nora Corkery, said: “We’d love to hear from people who have a story to tell about Devon Communities Together since 1961. You may also remember us as Devon Community Council or Community Council of Devon. Maybe we helped you build your village hall? Perhaps you turned to us to help establish a village shop, pub or other community facility? Maybe you participated in a community project we set up? You might even be an ex-employee or trustee? We’re aiming to create a collection of 60 ‘Devon Diamonds’ who have links to Devon Communities Together and who have created positive change in their communities. They will be showcased on our website and on our social media channels – we’ve already shared our first three!”

Nicola Gurr, DCT Chair, added: “Devon Communities Together is an amazing charity with people at the heart of all we do, from supporting our health colleagues in understanding the needs of the new mums to working with older people at risk of isolation in small villages. We have worked with towns and farmers and all in-between and we would really love to hear your memories of what makes Devon special and who has been an inspiration to you”
