The Pride of Sidmouth and the coastguard helicopter were scrambled at 11am after reports of a man shouting and waving for help near Otterton Ledge.

The diver, who was snorkling at the time, was picked up by Sidmouth Lifeboat crew and returned to dry land just after 12.10pm.

The lifeboat crew were Simon Sparrow, Glyn Jones, Phil Shepperd and Andy Downham.

Perry King, of Sidmouth Lifeboat, said: "People should be aware that around the rocks of Otterton Ledge there are rip currents which can even drag the strongest of swimmers out to sea.
