A DOG which had been missing for six days was rescued from a cliff near Sidmouth by coastguard today.

Beauty, a three-year-old Daschund, went missing last Saturday and her anxious owners have searched the area all week.

They heard barking this morning and told coastguard they thought Beauty was over the cliff at Dunscombe.

The Beer Coastguard team was called out and a rescue officer was lowered over the cliff and successfully recovered Beauty to her "grateful owner".

During the rescue, a 74-year-old woman walking the coastal path nearby collapsed and a coastguard attended the scene.

She did not need any further medical attention and she was transported back to her vehicle.

John Braisher, Watch Officer, Portland Coastguard said: "The coastguard would like to stress that dog owners walking their pets near cliffs should maintain control of them at all times by keeping them on a lead and in an emergency call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
