A DONKEY colt, rescued from a gypsy camp in Leeds, has been named in memory of one of Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary's supporters.
Sir John Harvey-Jones, MBE, chairman of ICI chemical company from 1982 to 1987, died in January.
He was also president of Ross-on-Wye town's brass band, which performed at Manor Gardens, Exmouth, on Saturday in aid of the animal charity.
A regular visitor to the sanctuary, he owned several donkeys and was friends with its founder Dr Elisabeth Svendsen, who, accompanied by two donkeys, attended his memorial service at Hereford Cathedral.
Dr Svendsen said: "Sir John was one of the few people to recognise that donkeys are very intelligent animals."
The colt, to be known as Sir John, is currently on a farm in Buxton, Derbyshire, before making the journey to his safe haven in Sidmouth.
