THOUSANDS of candles lit the Donkey Sanctuary on Tuesday evening when a special Christmas carol service was held.

More than 15,000 candles brightened the sanctuary and hundreds of supporters attended the event, which is held to help raise funds for the charity.

Throughout the year, supporters and visitors to the charity have been invited to purchase a candle to make a wish or express a thought, as a gift for someone special or in memory of a loved one.

A spokesman from the Donkey Sanctuary said: "It was a really lovely evening.

"We probably had between 800 and 1000 visitors who all seemed to enjoy soaking up the atmosphere and joining in with the Christmas carols.

"We were lucky with the weather too - It didn't rain but it was quite cold."

The candles were arranged by staff around the animal home in various shapes such as candles and Christmas trees and the donkeys quietly rested in their stables during the vigil.
