Ottery St Mary’s iconic Tumbling Weir could be safeguarded with a £15,500 project being considered by East Devon District Council (EDDC).

Cabinet members will consider the authority’s draft revenue and capital budgets for 2017/18 when they meet on Wednesday (January 11).

Their papers say a broken sluice gate threatens the future of the circular weir if it is not replaced.

The investment will also allow more water into the mill leat.

Other special items in the draft budget include spending £2,000 on replacing rotten treads on Canaan Bridge.

A report says: “If these works are not undertaken, the bridge will become unsafe and will have to be closed.

“There are other bridges – but to close and remove [it] will be more costly in the short-term and there will be a loss of an amenity.”

EDDC is also set to put £6,000 together with £4,000 from The King’s School to replace the dance studio floor at Ottery St Mary Sports Centre, which has reached the end of its life.
