Toby the tortoise wakes early from hibernation to give children at St John’s Nursery a treat.
TOBY the tortoise, Sidmouth’s St John’s Nursery mascot, gave the youngsters a treat when he woke from his winter hibernation early this year.
Toby, pictured with Frasier, from the nursery, and Hope from Year Nine, has been in head of nursery Mandy Saunders’ family for more than 60 years and it is believed he was more than 40 back then.
The elderly Toby has lived through some of the most amazing times in history, possibly scanning three centuries, said the school’s deputy head, Mike Burgess, who added: “Imagine what he’d be able to tell us if he could talk!”
Frasier is hoping to learn to speak tortoise to find out.
