Two Sidmouth businesses back school project to help wild birds survive winter
WITH such cold weather this winter, it is vitally important to ensure wild birds and other animals get enough to eat in order to survive.
At St Nicholas Junior School, Woolbrook, Sidmouth, Class 4T have been learning about the importance of looking after animals and taking extra care of the birds living in and around their homes and school.
As a Design Technology project, the pupils researched, planned and made bird feeders.
Class teacher Lucy Tyrrell said: “We had to be careful and choose the appropriate types of food for the wild birds. Bird seed, nuts and meal worms were kindly provided by Sidmouth Garden Centre and the fat used was generously donated by Hayman’s Butchers of Sidmouth.”
Children had fun putting their ideas into practice and learned many new facts about wild birds found locally as well as new skills about how to construct a bird feeder.
The feeders will be put to good use, being hung around the gardens of Sidmouth as well as the school grounds.
