The ‘Big Day’ might have been last Friday for most of the country but for the pupils at Branscombe saw the crowning of a Royal bride and groom at their school on Wednesday.

The children have spent part of this term planning for all aspects of the wedding, beginning with the official engagement of pupils Prince Kevin and Miss Isobel Wells.

They designed commemorative plates, wrote invitations, created cakes and made their own outfits for the wedding.

Plans for the celebration even made their way into maths lessons as pupils calculated how many slices of cake they could cut from each tier of their model wedding cakes.

Headteacher Katie Gray, said: “The children also wrote their own wedding vows which each child in the class wrote on a heart and then read them and hung them on a tree during the ceremony.”

Apart from the bride and groom pupils came dressed as the Prime Minister, Prince Charles, the Queen and the Archbishop of Canterbury to marry the couple.

Parents, governors and members of the village attended the ceremony in the school playground, where the newly crowned bride and groom cut the cake made by the kitchen staff at Branscombe Primary, which was followed by a street party lunch.

Catharine Willerton, a parent who attended, said: “It was a wonderful day that will be remembered by the parents and children for many years. We were very honoured that so many royal guests could attend our wedding knowing what busy schedules they have this week!”

The primary school enacted its own Royal Wedding after putting on a celebration for Mayday, where there was another crowning after guest of honour Lucy Morton from the National Trust crowned the May King and Queen Natasha and Curtis.

The regal couple then led the rest of the school into the dances round the maypole, watched by parents and local residents.

Natasha, 10, said: “I have been waiting for seven years to be May Queen and it was definitely worth the wait because it was really enjoyable and all the children danced really well.”
