St Nick’s pupils celebrate Chinese New Year with dragon making and stir fry

PUPILS at St Nicholas Primary, Woolbrook, were certainly not caught on the hop when they celebrated Chinese New Year last week.

In the year of the rabbit in 2011, Class 3M have been studying China for this half term’s project and before their celebration day on Friday, made a Chinese dragon from cardboard boxes.

Teacher Caroline Morgan said: “During the day, they used it to perform a Chinese dragon dance to traditional Chinese music.”

The industrious class also made red envelopes, which children in China receive with money inside, and decorated the classroom with paper lanterns they had made.

“They also did some Chinese cooking. Some groups made almond biscuits - a Chinese recipe -and some chopped vegetables for a stir fry,” said Ms Morgan.

They watched a stir fry being cooked and later had a banquet where they used chopsticks to eat it, as well as fortune cookies, prawn crackers and Chinese dumplings.
