Poor visibility for Dartmoor training but Sidmouth College teams complete 19k walk

A GROUP of 36 students and 10 staff experienced bitterly cold weather and snow on Dartmoor as they took part in their second Ten Tors training walk on Sunday, January 29.

They were well prepared for the cold, which was just as well as conditions deteriorated on the 19 kilometre circuit, starting at Princetown and taking in Burrator Reservoir, Sheeps Tor and Nun’s Cross.

Four groups set off, one from Year 11, two from Year 10 and a Year Nine group and headed towards the first checkpoint.

Visibilty was good and spirits were high, but as the day went on, conditions rapidly deteriorated, so that by the time the last group was finishing, it was snowing heavily and visibility was poor.

“It was impressive then that everyone completed the walk with such determination,” said a member of staff.

The Ten Tors training continues this weekend with an overnight camp on Dartmoor.
