Summer Reading Challenge youngsters invited to dress as aliens for tea and cake at Sidmouth Libary

Youngsters aged six and over made aliens at Sidmouth Library on Wednesday.

For an hour, library assistant Meriel Santer gave the children the chance to use their imagination and lots of materials to make their own alien at a summer holiday activity afternoon called Space Hop, Fantastic Aliens.

The title comes from this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Space Hop, ( which has been designed to bring a new dimension to challenge by finding out about new books to read, sharing comments and taking part in activities.

On Friday, September 3, to celebrate this year’s reading challenge, Sidmouth Library has organised a fancy dress Family Party at the library from 2-4pm, as a way of thanking participants and handing out certificates to those who have completed their challenge.

Librarian-in-charge Gill Spence said: “It is the first time we have given a party for the Summer Reading Challenge.

“There will be tea and cake and a family quiz. We hope children will dress in fancy dress as aliens and have a nice time and get their certificates.”

She said the library had given out 100 starter packs for the challenge.

“We are getting a good response this year. Children are coming in reading books and getting stickers, and so we want to mark it in a special way with a party.”
