SIDMOUTH Rotary Club is hosting a gardening competition for East Devon primary schools. The competition was the idea of rotarian Sandy Macfadyen, a member of the club’s environmental committee. The aim is to teach gardening skills to young people. There are seven schools taking part - Sidmouth; Seaton; Sidbury; St Nicholas, Woolbrook Branscombe; Farway; Manstone and Newton Poppleford. Judging will take place on Monday, by Derek Hurford and Darren Knapman of Sidmouth Garden Centre. The prizes will be presented at Sidmouth’s Hotel Riviera on Wednesday, at noon by horticulturalist Anne Swithinbank, a panellist on BBC Radio 4’s Gardeners’ Question Time. There will be cups for first and second best garden and shields for best carrot, bean and beetroot. Sidmouth Garden Centre has sponsored the prizes.
