Amanda inspired by letters from monks and nuns for doctoral thesis
SIDMOUTH musician Amanda Haste, pictured, has been awarded a PhD in Musicology.
She received her doctorate at the University of Bristol, accompanied by her mother, Janet Shenfield, and husband, Professor Tim Haste.
Amanda’s research, on the role of music in present-day Anglican monastic life, was inspired by correspondence with monks and nuns for her MA dissertation, during which she discovered a vibrant and discerning community.
Her 80,000-word doctoral thesis reveals a wealth of music in many styles and examines many aspects of the effect of music on modern monasticism.
Prior to re-entering academe, Dr Haste; formerly Amanda Prowse, had a successful Sidmouth-based music teaching practice for many years.
Since 1998 she has also been an active member of Sidmouth Croquet Club through which she met her husband Tim, a research scientist currently working for the French government.
Amanda now divides her time between academic conferences; performing and teaching in the south of France; and teaching adult students and seeing family and friends in Sidmouth.
