Research, writing and rehearsing pay off for St Nicholas Junior pupils involved in Spirit of the Blitz production
WEEKS of researching World War Two, writing scripts, rehearsing adverts and putting together costumes, video, dance and songs, paid off for Sidmouth primary pupils.
All the hard work put in with actors, film-makers and staff from Real Ideas Organisation, culminated in a one-off performance of the Spirit of the Blitz at Sidmouth’s Radway Cinema by Year Three and Six pupils from St Nicholas Junior School, Woolbrook, on Friday.
Watched by parents, grandparents and schoolchildren, the cinema was filled with the sound of song, laughter and applause as black and white clips showing various adverts – Digging for Victory, keeping scraps to feed chickens and two chefs whipping up soup and bread for Sir Winston Churchilll – were interspersed with favourite wartime songs, such as We’ll Meet Again, and a rousing jitterbug dance.
No doubt it brought back a few memories for some of those in the audience, who were then treated to an old 1948 Judy Garland film, The Pirate, by cinema staff.
