Sidmouth College students’ mental and physical prowess was put to the test when they took on the Exmoor Challenge.

The four teams had been practising every weekend since March, and the training paid off – the two Year Nine teams came third and 14th ¬¬out of 146.

They were joined by groups from Years Seven and Eight on the 16-mile trek, which they had to complete in five-and-a-half hours – no more and no less.

The teams also had to visit checkpoints along the route, and were tested on their map readings and their local knowledge.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for students to develop their teamwork and leadership skills,” said Sharon Vaughan, who organised and supported all of the teams throughout.

“We look forward now to next year’s challenge and the opportunity to welcome both new and experienced walkers.”

The school did not take part in the Ten Tors challenge this year, but has put a request for qualified mountain leaders to help out from the wider community.

A school spokesman said there had been a positive response and hopes the school will have teams in next year’s event.
