A super squash player picked up the ‘Jumbo Holmes’ prize at The King’s School sports awards.

Victoria Temple-Murray, known as Tory, received her award from special guest and ex- Olympic rower Reverend Mike Lapage at a sports presentation evening on Tuesday.

The 17-year old has the number one ranked player in Europe at U17 and was ranked top in Devon, the South West and England at each age group from U13s to under U17s.

She was the Belgium, French and English Open Junior champion at U17s and represented England at the U17 European Championships held in Switzerland, and the highlight of her career to date was selection for the U19 World Championships held in Boston this summer.

The evening invites students and their families to celebrate the success, effort, progress, determination, sportsmanship and leadership skills of The Kings students. Over 50 awards were presented to pupils from across the school for their achievement in sport.

These included special awards for Yasmina Martin-Ratcliffe, Georgia Cotterill and Marcus Bowyer for outstanding achievement in dance swimming and rowing respectively.

Martin Morgan and Pat Spargo took home the ‘Laura Crudge Award for 6th Form Voluntary Contribution to Sports Activities’ and the team of the year was the U16 Girls Indoor Hockey team, who were finalists at the prestigious West of England competition.

The Jumbo Holmes Award was presented to The King’s School by Jumbo’s parents in the 1950s in memory of their son, a student at the school and first XV rugby captain who died after diving off the cliffs near Jacob’s Ladder in Sidmouth.

Originally awarded to the 1st XV rugby player who achieved most on Sports Day, it is now handed to the ‘outstanding senior sportsperson’ at the school.
