Election to fill town council vacancy
PUBLISHED: 15:00 30 April 2013
AN ELECTION will be held to fill a South Ward vacancy on Sidmouth Town Council.
At least ten people had to request that such a poll to take place – and residents duly obliged.
The period for this part of the process ended yesterday (Thursday, April 25).
Town clerk Christopher Holland said this week: “I can confirm that we have received the required number of electors requesting that an election be held.
“This means that the council vacancy will be filled by the election process rather than via co-option.
“Some time after the Devon County Council elections (on May 2) the returning officer will set a provisional election date.
“Notices of Election will then be published after that time and nomination papers will be available from the returning officer or myself.
“If more than one person submits valid nomination papers a poll will be taken.
“The election date will not be set until well after the county council elections.”
Ex-councilllor Maggie Baldwin stood down from the role to care for her mother – and recommended it to anyone interested in local politics.
An article on the council vacancy last week incorrectly stated that the deadline for applications was last Friday. The Herald is happy to point out this is not the case and apologises for any confusion caused.
