SIDBURY Fair Week galloped to a successful conclusion, writes ELLEN COOK.

The last event of the festivities was a horse ride from Sidbury Manor on Sunday morning. It raised 430 for the fair week fund.

The 10-mile trek attracted 65 people, ranging from 12 to 65-years-old, of all riding abilities. The route took them up East Hill Strips and through Burscombe Farm, after which they got a chance to gallop.

Organiser Julie Farrell, 40, said: “It went brilliantly. We had one gent who’d been riding for just 12 months, through to people who’d been riding for more years than they care to remember.”

This is the third year Julie, who owns two horses herself, has run the event.

“The first year we had about 20 people, so it’s really grown,” she said. “I couldn’t have done it without the help of Nutty Nags Riding Club, so thanks to everyone there.”

On the previous Friday, fair committee member Alan Derryman hosted a tug of war and hog roast at Home Farm. About 180 people attended, with the winners of the ladies’ and men’s tugs competing against each other. “The ladies had the advantage, because everyone piled onto their side for that tug,” said Alan. “Everyone had fun and it’s good to think we’re keeping the traditions of fair week going.”
