AN AWARD has been presented to Fields of Sidmouth this week for the service it provides to assistance dog users.
Restaurant manager Paul Grainger and his team received a Dog Star Award from representatives of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association on Wednesday.
Severely deaf Dorothy Piper and her hearing dog Obi, together with Margaret Rice and her guide dog Naomi, made the presentation, given in recognition that the premises and services meet the needs of assistance dog users.
Dorothy said: "I always enjoy going to the store with Obi, especially the restaurant.
"The staff are very assistance dog friendly, they always welcome us both and find a suitable table for me and a bowl of water for Obi.
"Even during busy times they will go out of their way to make us very comfortable."
Brian Dowie, store manager, said: "Fields has always taken great pride on its quality of service to customers and this especially extends to those customers with special needs."
It is the first time the store has been recognised for its service to those needing the help of assistance dogs.
During 2008 Canine Partners, Dogs for the Disabled, guide dogs, hearing dogs and support dogs have worked together as Assistance Dogs UK promoting rights of access to transport, restaurants, shops and other services for assistance dog users.
