CAMERAS were rolling on Beer beach last Sunday to cover a training session of the Fitzhenry channel swimming family. The six men of the family hope for as much media coverage as possible to raise money for their three chosen charities. The charities are The Motor Neurone Association, the Exeter Leukaemia Fund and Rays of Sunshine, which makes wishes come true for seriously ill children. This will be the first time they have trained together in the sea with a boat accompanying them. It allows them to get better training and TV crews to record their progress. The challenge has attracted so much interest because it is so rare to have six people from the same family swimming the channel together. The family are Paul, his brothers David and Neal and David's three sons, Lee, Daniel and Craig. The distance is 21 miles, but this is invariably made longer by strong tides. The swim will be done in relay style, an hour at a time, and could take more than 16 hours. The six are receiving lots of training advice from channel swimmer Steve Price and their pilot will be none other than Alison Streeter, who has swum the channel more times than anyone else.Sponsorship forms for the Swim Like a Fitz challenge are available from Sidmouth Garden Centre Restaurant, the Britannia Building Society in High Street, Sidmouth, and Hayman's Butchers in Woolbrook. The family is also looking for more companies to sponsor them.If your company would like to sponsor or make a donation, call organiser Terry Yorke (01395) 515055 or 07970 868399.Donations in the form of cheques can be made out to ELF Swim Like a Fitz charity swim and sent to 76 Alexandria Road, Sidmouth, EX10 9HG.
