FIVE people were injured after two cars crashed near Putts Corner last Friday.

The collision which involved a red Fiat Punto and silver Peugeot 306 happened at about 8.30am on the A375 road in the direction of Seaton.

Three casualties from the Punto and two from the Peugeot were hurt although none of the injuries were life threatening.

Two fire crews from Honiton and a rescue vehicle from Exmouth were sent to the scene.

Firemen released a woman who was trapped in one of the cars using hydraulic rescue equipment.

An air ambulance was then called and the woman, who was suffering from serious leg injuries, was taken to hospital.

Three other casualties suffering from spinal and head injuries including one man and a woman were taken to Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital by ambulance for further treatment.

Four ambulances, two rapid response vehicles and Sidmouth police were also in attendance.

The road was closed for a short time while recovery vehicles took away the cars.

The Highways Agency was also called to the scene to clear up an oil spill caused by the collision.

A police spokesperson said: "There was a significant amount of oil and debris on the road as a result of the collision which caused delays for drivers."

All emergency services left the scene by 11.20am.
