SIDMOUTH Chamber of Commerce will meet with town councillors on July 7 to finalise plans for CCTV cameras in the town.A number of options for the project will be put to councillors, as well as quotes from different companies, to construct the network of cameras. The Herald and the chamber joined forces last year to launch the WATCh campaign to improve safety and reduce fear of crime in the town centre.Chamber member Chris Taylor, who helped compile the list of camera sites, said they were still waiting for a decision from BT on whether it would give free broadband to relay images from the cameras to a monitoring station. This is a factor in deciding which system would be chosen. When a plan has been agreed, members of the Chamber of Commerce will go back to traders and businesses to appeal for any shortfall in funds.A list of prioritised sites for CCTV cameras includes:l Market Place, with a camera covering the square, Church Street and New Street.l Near the Radway Cinema, covering Vicarage Road and Radway looking towards Salcombe Road and Tesco is also on the list.l A camera at the corner of Pure Indulgence, covering the High Street up to Nat West Bank, Russell Street and old Fore Street. There could be up to 10 cameras depending on the money available and system chosen.Mr Taylor said it would make the town less susceptible to acts of vandalism and targeting from criminal gangs coming in from other areas. He said it was an unfortunate sign of the times but not having CCTV cameras made towns more likely to be targets of violence.Once a decision has been made on which plan to use, Mr Taylor hoped the network could be set up within three months.
