AWARD: Beer Parish Council agreed to confer the title of ‘Honorary Freeman of the Parish’ to former chairman John Wells at a special meeting last week. The clerk, Annie Dalloway said the councillors felt his contribution to the village and to Beer council over many years had been so huge he deserved to be recognised with the award. It is the first time such a title has been bestowed by the parish council, and there will be a formal ceremony in the spring where Mr Wells will be presented with a medal and certificate. Annie added: “He feels very honoured.”

VOLUNTEERS: The National Trust ranger team in Branscombe has created a new conservation volunteer group to help revive Combe Wood, an ancient oak and ash woodland known for its bluebells and sightings of rare native dormice. They meet every other Wednesday from 10.00am to 3.00pm at the woodland between Honiton and Combe Raleigh and is open to anyone 18 or over with all tools provided, volunteers just need to bring a packed lunch and warm clothes. CONCERT: Performances by Andy Eastwood and Lucia Matisse are part of a concert to raise money for Devon Air Ambulance and Macmillan Cancer Support in the Mariners Hall in Beer. Entitled ‘Songs from the Years Gone By’, it takes place on Friday, November 18 at 7.30pm.
