THE AREA of Fortescue, Sidmouth, has received little recognition on the many signs directing traffic to the area, apart from one on the A3052 on the easterly approach to Sidford.

Now, as part of a calming priority system, drawn up as the final piece of the Sidmouth to Sidford/Fortescue cyclepath and footpath scheme, it will be recognised on name place signs.

The scheme was called for by Sidmouth/Sidford Devon County Councillor Stuart Hughes after he received concerns about the speed of vehicles travelling along Fortescue Road from the local residents' association.

He said: "I am delighted that this scheme, which I called for almost two years ago, is finally going to be implemented.

"It will certainly help in slowing down vehicles on Fortescue Road.

"I am also delighted to see that Fortescue is at last going to be put well and truly on the map, with the provision of place signs and the one at the southern end will state 'please drive slowly'.
