Police have warned letters, purporting to be from China, tell householders a late relative made a property investment in the country before their death and they now stand to inherit 38 million US dollars.
Criminals ask recipients to keep the news quiet in a bid to open dialogue with them and obtain details.
Sidmouth police this week warned townsfolk: “If it sounds too good to be true it probably is.” Officers have urged residents not to become engaged in any correspondence with the senders.
