Volunteers of all ages from a pair of popular Sidmouth clubs donned their gardening gloves and armed themselves with shovels to take part in the town’s ‘Valley of a Million Bulbs’ project.

Sidmouth Town AFC and Sidmouth Surf Life Saving Club did their bit for the ambitious community initiative on Saturday (October 17).

The life saving club got to work on Peak Hill, while the football club planted daffodils and crocuses around their base at the Manstone Recreation Ground.

Andy Argyle, development officer at Sidmouth Town AFC, said the 60 volunteers mustered by the club were happy to be part of the project for the third year running.

He said: “We started off with planting around the edge of the recreation ground, but as it was such a delightful picture after the first year we decided to expand it all around the edge.

“We wanted mums and dads and children to be involved - and some of the more senior members of the club brought along their grandchildren.

“The kids seemed to love it.”

On Peak Hill, a group of 30 members of the surf lifesaving club exceeded their target of 6,000 daffodil bulbs.

Club chairman Dave Manley said: “We managed 8,000 because we had so many people.

“It was great to do something for the Keith Owen appeal because it has been instrumental in making the surf lifesaving club a success.”
