DESPITE dreadful weather, a leaking marquee and pre-show vandalism by children, organisers declared Sid Valley Horticultural Society's 80th gardening and craft show "a great success."

For the second year running it poured on the day, but, said show secretary Beryl Kingman: "Our individual entries were up by nearly 200 to almost 650 and the standard of all entries was extremely high."

Eight tables were overturned the night before Saturday's show at Sidford sports field, leaving organisers the task of re-setting them before exhibitors could set out their entries.

On show day part of the marquee began leaking, leaving children's colourful paintings and photographs running with water until tables were moved to the opposite side.

Chairman Maureen Britton said: "It was fraught but some of the entries were stunning.

"Judges said it was the coldest it had been. We were wearing fleeces under our coats. I think, perhaps, the weather stopped a lot of older people coming to the show."

However, one woman of 89 told Mrs Britton she had taken a taxi from her Woolbrook home to the show, which she hasn't missed in 40 years.

Councillor Tom Cox, town council chairman, presented prizes. Mrs Kingman thanked Sidford WI, Sidmouth Garden Centre, St John Ambulance, exhibitors and supporters.

"Many thanks to all who braved the weather and came and supported us," she said.

The main draw prize is unclaimed. Holder of white ticket 480 should contact organisers.

Mrs Britton said suggestions were made to move the show from August, but said: "It is traditional to have it in August, we will stick with it and pray we can't be unlucky a third year running."

Next year's show will take place on Saturday, August 15.
