SIDMOUTH was just pipped to the post for the Sargent Cup in this year s South West in Bloom awards.

SIDMOUTH was just pipped to the post for the Sargent Cup in this year's South West in Bloom awards.

Although gold winners, they were beaten to the trophy by Thornbury.

However, there were celebrations at the prize-giving ceremony in Plymouth last week when a certificate of outstanding achievement was awarded to Witheby residents Kay Marshall and Sylvia Gibbard.

This will be presented at Sidmouth in Bloom's presentation evening at The Knowle on Thursday, October 30.

All of East Devon did well. Exmouth won gold and were overall winners in the St. Bridget Cup category, East Budleigh won gold in the Mary Mortimer Cup, and Beer, in the Cox Cup, won silver gilt.

Seaton won silver gilt in the SWTA Cup while Budleigh Salterton won gold in the Ayre Cup.

Sidmouth in Bloom secretary Caroline Carroll said: "There will be no resting on our laurels now because the RHS informed us that during the coming year we will have to provide evidence of year-round participation by the whole community."

This year's theme of Local Roots is being retained for another two years so the committee may develop the theme of history, heritage and cultural diversity.

President Joy Seward expressed her delight at gold and for the Witheby winners.

She said: "We have never had a category to enter them before, we didn't realise we could enter them for a neighbourhood award.

"We took the judges up there as they both worked extremely hard and are absolutely delighted they got the top award."

Her delight is tempered by concerns at the lack of help for the group's mammoth task ahead to fulfil the RHS's requirements.

"I am worried because we don't have enough people to do the things we want to do. I hope to get more volunteers soon because we do want to keep Sidmouth special.
