Sidmouth’s new King of Chit was officially crowned at a coronation ceremony over the bank holiday weekend.

Bob Carter, 59, took up the regal role at the Swan Inn after being chosen by the Golden Goose.

The High Street resident was presented with the traditional robe and crowned by last year’s king, Rob Cooper, at the coronation.

Bob said: “I felt very honoured and surprised to be asked. It is was all good fun, it is an old tradition... It was all a very enjoyable and a great atmosphere.”

The tradition dates back more than 120 years to when regulars at the Swan would race to the seafront. The first to climb to the top of Chit Rocks, near Jacob’s Ladder, which have since been washed away, was crowned as king.
