SIDMOUTH Save the Children Shop was adopted for a day this week by Girl Guides in their bid to change the world.

The 1st Woodbury Guides teamed up with the local charity as part of a larger scheme organised by Girlguiding UK.

To celebrate their centenary the national group has created 19 different world-changing projects for girls and young women.

Helen Ellis, unit leader of 1st Woodbury Guides, said: "The girls took over £300 during the day and the charity was very pleased with the amount they raised.

"The girls particularly wanted to do something to help children so they chose this charity to work for.

"They were shown how to set up the shop, process and label goods. It gave them an insight into retail.

All funds raised will go towards Save the Children's lifesaving health and hunger work.

The charity helps children in countries who are dying at a young age and it helps to provide lifesaving equipment such as rehydration salts.

Jan Shephard, manager of Save the Children, said: "We were very pleased with them and their enthusiasm was quite amazing.

"It was lovely to see them and their excitement and I think we are going to do it again next year."

Helen added: "It really has shown they can make a difference and the guides are supporting community action.

"I would like to thank the staff for supporting us and finding extra volunteers for the day to supervise the girls."
