SPECTACULAR Sidbury Fireworks attracted a record crowd of more than 3,000 people as the Gunpowder Plot was re-enacted in the village.

The annual on November 5 event was hailed a “huge success” by delighted organisers.

The bonfire was constructed as a replica of the Houses of Parliament and Sidbury’s own Guy Fawkes, Keith Hudson, lit the fuse before the structure burned to the ground.

A dazzling 20 minute show saw 7,000 worth of fireworks ignited.

It is hoped a substantial donation from surplus event proceeds can be made to armed forces charity DecAid. Funds were still being counted this week.

Band the Raphaelites also entertained huge crowd that consumed 30 gallons of mulled wine, 480 pints of beer and cider, 10 gallons of tea and coffee, 200 toffee apples, one pig roast, 800 burgers and scores of soft drinks.

A dry and mild Saturday evening with little wind boosted the event in the grounds of Sidbury Manor.

“We are always extremely grateful to local businesses and individuals who sponsor the event,” said Sidbury Fireworks treasurer Roger Davey.

He also expressed the organising committee’s thanks to around 30 local residents who give up their time to boost the event - which has grown to become one of the largest in Devon.
