East Devon District Council (EDDC) says its’ housing support staff are working hard to raise the profile of technology among those in living in sheltered accommodation with a series of ‘silver surfer’ events.
And the authority says it’s been ‘pleasantly surprised’ by the number of residents willing to get involved.
Requests for help have ranged from advice on buying a PC to downloading music on to iPods, social networking and live video calling - in order to get in touch with relatives across the globe.
Amy Gilbert, EDDC support services manager said: “We’re helping residents to see how modern technology can be part of their everyday life and can give them real support to live independently for longer.
“It’s been particularly rewarding to see residents link up with families and friends living abroad and, in some cases, provide them with the opportunity to see grandchildren for the very first time.”
