The Sid Valley’s two new daffodil varieties were a sellout success when they were offered for the first time on Saturday.
Only 150 were available of each of ‘Sidmouth’, a bright yellow scented flower with a red trumpet, and ‘Keith Owen’ a beautiful white bloom with a pink-orange centre that was named after a benefactor who left his fortune to the town.
Purchasers were encouraged to plant their precious bulbs in the most favourable situation, and to allow further bulbs to be produced and planting extended so that the varieties over time become a real and recognisable feature of the town.
The two new daffodils were secured from a South West grower and registered with the Royal Horticultural Society by the newly-formed Sidmouth Daffodil Society.
It aims to build on the remarkable success of the ‘Valley of a Million Bulbs’ project being delivered by the Keith Owen Fund.
