The scent of sweet peas led almost 300 members and visitors to All Saints Church Hall to view 192 entries in 87 classes by 41 exhibitors at Sidmouth Garden Club Summer Show. Once there, all were further entertained with displays of beautiful roses, wonderful arrangements of flowers, both large and small, and delightful miniatures comprised of delicate garden and wild flowers. The skill and patience in producing such truly wonderful specimens of flowers, fruit and vegetables won the admiration of all. The show was enhanced with exhibits entered by 22 children aged from three to 10 years. Their displays and designs were admired by all and thrilled everyone, without exception. Thanks must go to Sidmouth Day Nursery and the Allen and Bagwell children for giving us such pleasure.Competition is always keen at our shows and this one was no exception. Judges always have a hard time deciding who has won the class entered, with very fine lines and parameters separating the final positions. Gordon Newton, head gardener at Exeter University, took on the task of judging fruit and vegetables, Olive Jacombs Price judged the decorative classes, and Joy Everington the floral entries. By drawing on all their experience and knowledge, their deliberations produced the results. These were converted into presentations by vice-president John Wright to the winners in the form of cups and trophies, which they hold for the year, and medals that would be kept permanently.Sidmouth Garden Club always welcomes new members. We hold three shows and seven talks each year, as well as two or three outings to gardens and/or houses. So why not think about joining?
