History has been made in Branscombe after its new churchyard was consecrated.

Dame Sarah Mullally, the Bishop of London, visited the village last month to carry out the service at St Winifred’s Church which was attended by parishioners, villagers and children from the primary school.

The Reverend Prebendary Hilary Dawson hosted a luncheon for Dame Sarah, the former Bishop of Crediton, before the consecration service.

Members of the congregation walked up to witness the historic occasion and after the service the bishop planted daffodil bulbs with the school children.

Churchwarden Ross Willmington said: “During the service the vicar paid tribute to the members of the church, in particular long-serving churchwarden Norman Brimson, who had doggedly worked to secure the extra piece of land from the National Trust – a task that has taken over 12 years.”
