A series of fascinating afternoon talks on historical subjects at Kennaway House
A series of afternoon talks entitled Travelling into History’ with archaeologist Ffiona Eaves and University of St Andrew’s art history graduate Jess Morgan, is taking place at Kennaway House.
The first, on Tuesday March 26, was Ffiona’s presentation, Wining and Dining in Antiquity, which explored the way customs in eating and drinking changed over the centuries.
There was going to be a talk on Tuesday, April 2, but it has had to be postponed until April 30.
The next will now be on Tuesday April 9. In Messages in Stone, Ffiona Eaves will be focusing on the mosaic floors of Roman houses, and whether their designs carried signals anbout the house’s owner and his status.
On Monday, April 15, Jess Morgan presents Art or Science? The Pioneers of Early Photography. She will examine the first scientific experiments in photography, and the debate over its validity as an art form. Was this new technology a vehicle for scientific development, or a creative practice to rival painting?
St Ives and its Artists is the subject of the postponed talk, on Tuesday April 30. Jess Morgan will look into why the small seaside town in Cornwall produced painters and sculptors of such influence and prominence in modern art. She will explore the life and work of Barbara Hepworth, Alfred Wallis and Ben Nicholson, among others.
