SIDMOUTH'S 59th Horticultural Society autumn show is expected to bring in the crowds next week.

The last show on Sidmouth's 2008 horticultural calendar takes place on Thursday, September 4, in All Saints Hall and the organisers are hoping for a large turn-out.

John Wright, the Society's show director and vice-president, said: "I am looking forward to it although it is a lot of hard work but it is definitely worth it.

"I hope there will be more people than ever before as I've been canvassing all of my friends but each year is different as the weather pattern interferes."

Mr Wright expects in the region of 200 exhibits from about 30 exhibitors and awards will be given to first, second and third place in a number of categories from roses to chrysanthemums.

The shows each year attract both a number of green-fingered Sidmothians and tourists. Mr Wright added: "There are a couple of holiday makers that ring me up every year to check when the show is on so they can arrange their holiday around it."

Besides the array of weird and wonderful flowers and plants on display there will also be light refreshments and a sales table.

The show starts at 11.30am and the prize giving runs through the day until 4.45pm. The event is free to members and there will be a fee of £1.50 to non-members.
