Double yellow lines on Sidmouth’s most dangerous junctions could soon be coming into force along with parking restrictions around the town.

Devon County Council has proposed a number of changes which include the removal of three spaces on the seafront for a coach stop.

The authority has also been looking at placing yellow lines near the junctions of Livonia Road and Sidford Road; Fry’s Lane and Higher Brook Meadow; Manstone Lane and Sidford Road; Primley Road and Primley Mead; Cranford and Brewery Lane; Cotmaton Road and Bickwell Valley; and Manstone Lane – East West spur and North South spur junction.

The council is also investigating whether to introduce yellow lines along one side of Glen Road between the Manor Road and Cotmaton Road junctions.

If given the go-ahead, parking restrictions will also be placed on parts of Cottington Mead and Station Road.

Another potential change was for a ‘no waiting’ section, between 8am and 6pm from Monday to Friday, near the entrance of Sidmouth College.

The council is also looking at removing some double yellow lines in Bedford Square and replacing them with a ‘30 minutes no return’ restriction, between 10am and 6pm from Monday to Saturday.

Town councillors were asked to share their views on the proposals at the latest Sidmouth Town Council meeting on Monday.

Councillor Stuart Hughes said the proposed changes had come about after requests from members of the public.

Cllr Fiona Newth said: “Some of these have been long awaited. The one that springs to mind is Cottington Mead, the residents in Cottington Court have complained long and hard about that junction.

“As for the one in Cranford – some residents have had their walls demolished by heavy good lorries – they have been waiting for years.”

Cllr Simon Pollentine said: “I cannot see why three 24-seven car spaces should be lost on The Esplanade for coaches to use for half-an-hour a day.”

Cllr Dawn Manley also added: “I don’t see why we need to lose half a dozen spaces on Station Road, you can see around the corner – it is a waste of time and money.”
