Sidmouth will become another spot on the Army Benevolent Fund's 'Biggest Curry Lunch in the World' map this June. The food event has been organised by Maureen D'Albertanson of Coulsdon Road - whose family knew only too well the sacrifices servicemen make.Mrs D'Albertanson's grandfather died while serving in the Navy in World War Two, after surviving World War One. He left his wife struggling, near-penniless with two young children.Retired headteacher Mrs D'Albertanson, 63, grew up with her father often away for long periods after he had joined the Services for a 25-year career."As the daughter of a Royal Marine," said Mrs D'Albertanson, "I never realised the significance or danger my Dad was in when he was sent to Aden or Cyprus."The majority of the population have lost touch with the Armed Forces and their families. It is easy to dismiss stories of injured soldiers with 'well they chose to go into the Army'."Sponsorship for Sidmouth's curry lunch has flowed freely, with The Anchor pub providing a function room, and Waitrose supplying food. Diners will be asked for a donation, as Mrs D'Albertanson hopes to raise £1,000 or more for the fund. The lunch will be held between noon and 1.30pm on June 14, at The Anchor in Old Fore Street. For more information, contact Mrs D'Albertanson on (01395) 514549.
