An ‘intoxicated’ man was ‘somewhat embarrassed’ after rescue crews were called when he fell asleep on a Sidmouth beach - as the tide came in.
Beer Coastguard was tasked to the scene at 12.47pm today (Wednesday). High tide was at 1.30pm.
A coastguard spokesman said: “Tasked to a male believed to be unconscious on Sidmouth beach. A member of the public was concerned as the tide was washing around his legs and he had not moved.
“The first coastguard rescue officer arrived on scene to see the male wake up and make his way off the beach, somewhat embarrassed.
“The male was intoxicated and had fallen asleep – he had obviously not checked the tide times before falling asleep.”
