A true stalwart of Sidmouth is delighted to have replaced a community bench at Stevens Cross – 40 years after installing the original.

Former hotelier Joy Seward featured in the Herald when she officially presented the old seat to the town four decades ago.

At the time, the idea - organised by Sidmouth Hotels and Caterers’ Association - was to provide a place for people to relax and view Sidford’s beautiful flower displays.

The whole Seward family has now chipped in to replace the former bench with a fine wooden replica to keep the legacy alive and spread the joy among the locals and visitors, who they hope will take time to sit and enjoy the spot.

Joy said: “We are delighted to have a bench there again so that the community can use that corner.”
