Jumbo jumble sale kicks off in Ottery
Donations have been pouring into one of largest jumble sales in the South West, stretching over two weekends and starting tomorrow morning.
Held every year in Ottery St Mary, and organised by the town’s Scouts, teams are sent round collecting unwanted items from people’s houses in the weeks running up to the event.
Mary Moore, organiser of the event said: “There have been some real gems unearthed already, which bodes well for the sale and the auction starting on Saturday.”
John Green Ottery St Mary Scout leader said everyone in the group gets involved, from Cubs to Explorers along with parents and other volunteers.
The organisers have said collections this week have seen a greater response from the people of Ottery and West Hill than in previous years.
Cub Scout leader Catrina Johnson said the group was very grateful for all the donations, adding: “We realise that times are hard for a lot of people and that they could sell many of these items themselves to raise much needed extra cash.
“Choosing to support the Scouts instead is very generous.”
The funds raised by the jumble sale are used to pay for scouting activities for the 120 young people in the Ottery Scout Group throughout the year.
Mr Green said: “The whole event is amazing and involves so many people both involved with the Scout Group and those who just turn up every year to offer their time to help.
“The first weekend is always exciting especially seeing what turns up for the auction, we repeat the whole process again on Saturday 4 February with the sale of all clothes, shoes and household items.”
The sale starts on tomorrow morning at 11am with a sale of books, CD’s and DVD’s in the Coleridge Pre-School.
This is then followed by the sale of furniture, bric-a-brac, toys and cakes from 1.30pm at The Institute and Old Boys School opposite each other on Yonder Street, and a 100 lot auction starts at 2.45pm.
