Evie, four, would have had to throw out all of her treats due to her food allergies but after responding to a Facebook post, residents across the town made sure to stock up to give her a trick or treat experience to remember.

An Ottery mum says she was ‘reduced to tears’ after kind residents helped to give her daughter a perfect Halloween.

Amelia Wicks posted on Facebook asking if nearby neighbours could offer alternative snacks or non-food options for her daughter Evie who has been diagnosed with multiple allergies and intolerances.

Refined sugars, lactose, dairy and chocolate, are some of the food items which causes the four-year-old’s skin to flare up in painful eczema, which can be treated with cream and antibiotics.

Amelia said she was inspired to post after learning about a project called the teal pumpkin which encourages people to put out a teal item to show they have sweets or items suitable for a child with allergies.

The mum-of-three said she was overwhelmed by the response from more than 50 people who offered to fill little Evie’s pumpkin basket when she went trick or treating on Tuesday.

Amelia said: “It was overwhelming. It has been fantastic what people have said they will do. The community really pulls together and making it a great time.

“She was really excited, it is really sweet and I am so pleased it has worked out. It is an experience for children to dress up and get lots of sweets, most people do it.

“She has a lovely bucket full of treats that she is delighted with. I know I could have easily got away with not taking her trick or treating at her age but the fact she was able to go out with all her little friends and receive treats that people had gone out specially and bought for her has actually reduced me to tears and I am so grateful to each of you for making this work.”
