Want to learn how to make lace? A special event is being held at the Museum offering expert advice and hands-on opportunities.

The lacemaking day at Sidmouth Museum is on Tuesday May 10 from 10am until 4pm.

Museum volunteer Bee Barford said: “It’s going to be very interesting. There will be people demonstrating quilting, lacemaking and patchwork and anyone can have a go at lacemaking.”

Lace made in the area was known as ‘Honiton lace’ and was an important part of the local economy with women and children helping to supplement the incomes of fishermen and farmers.

Members of Sidmouth Patchers and Quilters will be helping with the event.

The Museum has a new display featuring the craft of lacemaking based around the former shop in Banwell House in Old Fore Street run by Miss Hannah Barnard.

The exhibit features a sample book reconstructed with scraps of lace discovered in an old cardboard box.
