More than 50 former Land Army ladies will be honoured in Exeter this week. The women, who kept Exeter and Devon s farms going during the Second World War, will attend an afternoon tea reception at the city s Guildhall on Wednesday (October 1) at 3pm.
More than 50 former Land Army ladies will be honoured in Exeter this week.
The women, who kept Exeter and Devon's farms going during the Second World War, will attend an afternoon tea reception at the city's Guildhall on Wednesday (October 1) at 3pm.
The Lord Mayor of Exeter, Cllr Paul Smith, will host the event in recognition of the work carried out by members of the Women's Land Army during the Second World War and to personally thank them for their efforts. He will present each of the 56 ladies with a personalised and framed certificate.
It is believed to be the first event of its kind in Devon, if not the South West.
With the country at war and all able bodied men needed to fight, there was a shortage of labour to work on farms and in other jobs on the land. The Women's Land Army provided much of the labour force to work the land - with hundreds heading for the field and farms of Devon.
The event has already proved to be very popular and promises to be a memorable afternoon. Blitz and Peaces, who specialise in music and sounds from the Second World War, have kindly offered to provide entertainment for the afternoon.
