‘Their views are vital in creation of Neighbourhood Plan’
The biggest-ever study to capture the views of the Sid Valley’s youngest generation is now under way, writes Eleanor Pipe.
Students from Sidmouth College, St John’s School and Sidmouth and Sidbury primary Schools had their first proper taste of democracy in action this week, when they completed questionnaires to help shape the future of their community.
The Sid Valley Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group has launched the survey to feed into a document that is representative of everyone in the parish. Once adopted, it will influence planning for the next 20 years and beyond.
Whether the ideas put forward include plans for a drone helipad, multi-purpose gaming shed on The Esplanade, or to protect the town’s natural surroundings – project leaders say getting the views of young people is vital.
Steering group chairman Dee Hounsom said: “The children of the Sid Valley will have their say and share their ideas by completing a survey that has been designed by an advisory group of seven to 18-year-olds from each of the four Sid Valley schools. This is the third stage in the process - the views of the population were gathered in the spring, businesses had their say in the summer and now it’s the turn of our youngsters before all the feedback is summarised in one final local population survey next spring.”
There are two separate surveys for younger and older age groups and further information will be sent home in book bags.
